This light read is very funny narration by a woman protagonist(Nadia). Story run through the life of a old man in England who marries an migrant young women valentina from Ukraine. Nadia and Vera are daughters of this old man from the first marriage.
Although it is termed as a work of fiction the comedy and characters in the story is almost real life like. Story unveils the relationship between the young wife and the old man, along with the intervention of other characters especially the daughters.
As it is clearly a marriage of convenience it falls apart eventually as the expectations of both the parties are not met. women dont get any money or comfortable life she was wishing for and the old man could not stand the wrath of the women.
Story also narrates the life of the Old man and the way the family survived the world war 2 and migrated to England. It is mentioned in a way that the Nadia the younger daughter(peace time Kid- she was born after the great war) learns all the struggles her family had to go through. It makes her to understand more about her elder sister Vera and her late mother and she could accept the difference between themselves.
Book also reveals the raw spirit of human values that even though we uphold certain values when it comes to our own lives we always look for the easy option. Even when we talk about equality,freedom and acceptance it is not easy to implement them in our daily lives. prejudices based on status quo always come in first..
Take away from the book is that when u grow old you better have something to keep yourself busy, some passion which you can work on. else you will get old easily.
Hope i can find that passion of mine soon ...May that is what i am doing right now... dont know.
i had discussion about few facts mentioned in the book with my Russian Colleague. though the discussion was very short and he was born years after the war, he could share more things about Ukrain and Russia. even though i read the books and lot of other materials when it comes to discussions my skill to recall the facts and figures as it is bit on the lower side. May be i need to read it again...
